This report is for: April-Sept. 2000
Region: Midlands
Group: Shire of Grey Gargoyles
Reporter: Mistress Amelie d’Anjou
Group events: We are preparing for fallRUM on Oct. 7.
Group Demos: On Sept. 24th we had our fall student demo. This went very well. We had fighting (heavy & light), music, card weaving and sewing all happening at once. Jivete and Ysenda calligraphed the table sign, where more information and nifty things were displayed. In addition to many Gargoyles, our thanks also to Sir Fern, Peregrine and Lady Arianne of Tre-Girt-Sea for coming and helping out.
Guilds &/or Special Interest Groups: My singing group Tres Trepei; Chretien is singing with the Pippins, and he and Sarafina play with Master Robbyan’s instrumental group The Baron’s Noyse ; & Kathleen, Sarafina and Ryan participate in the Silver Thimble Guild. [I wouldn’t call any of these gargoyle groups.]
Personal Projects:
Svein, now renaming himself Thomas, made our very period pavillion just in time for Pennsic. It is lined with a linen brocade he dyed blue. He has a web site about his research; see http://baphomet.uchicago.edu/ He also taught a class at Three-from-the -Tree on the difference between a good A&S mead and a good period mead, and sewed an Andalusian style surcoat for me.
I taught 13c Andalusian Cooking at Three-from-the -Tree and am planning a class about 12c polyphony for RUM; both are new classes for me. I also taught 2 classes at Pennsic, one on troubadors and one on Medieval Garden Design, which was very well attended. I also (with help) sewed some new outfits for Curtis, started a sprang hat, and wove some silk ribbon to use as facing on Curtie’s new outfits.
Etienne was busy at Pennsic, making a goat-skin covered crossbow quiver and helping with 21 pairs of shoes and a bag. His lady, Sarafina Sinclair, is also quite busy. She made 2 Italian Renaissance dresses, is working on couching sleeves and learning crewel embroidery. This in addition to organizing RUM as autocrat, and becoming the assistant to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.
Constance Grey is the Dean of the College of A&S, and has been busy planning for RUM, for which she is also making a beef stew. Her lord Jonathon continues to encourage peole to play period games such as Barres, Tirce, Frog in the Middle, Pole Wrestling and Hoodman's Bluff. Some of these are now becoming popular at fighter practice.
Rhieinwylydd (moved here from the West in the spring) has been sewing a lot. Besides making lots of garb for her 2& 1/2 year old son Ian, she has made a farthingale and bumroll, is working on a new bodice and shirt, and got picked to do "beta testing" for an Elizabethan pattern.
Ryan is doing great in his new role as daddy, hosted a mead-tasting, and is planning the dancing for RUM.
Birute is studying early Spanish harp technique, and also began studying Ganassi-style recorder technique on G-alto recorder. (Ganassi: 16th c. Italian who wrote music treatises)
Kosamina has been using guache paints and callingraphy pens to do illumination and lettering.
Aine learned tablet weaving and made a tabletwoven belt.
Bojei will be making a Mongolian lamb stew for RUM. She continues to have armoring sessions at her home.
Henry Warnok has been doing period woodworking, basic garb, beading trim, and celtic decoration of leather armor.
People to watch: Several new people have moved to our group; some are students from other kingdoms.
Praises/Problems:
MoAS Goals and progress: Real life is preventing me from ever getting this report done on time. (or is it just me?)
Events I’ll be attending: RUM, Costume Collegium, Bardic Madness South
