Local Arts & Sciences Report

This report is for: Oct - Dec. ‘98
Region: Midlands
Group: Shire of Grey Gargoyles
Reporter: Mistress Amelie d’Anjou

Group events: Japes & Jongluers on Dec. 5. [co-held with Tre-Girt-Sea]
This was a bardic event -- focus on performing arts. Many local members participated in the various challenges during the day, including myself, Svein Sveinson, Mary McIntosh, Ryan of Grey Gargoyles, Alan Fairfax, Jonathon the Osprey and Constance . (There may be others I don’t remember.) The challenges covered singing, poetry, riddles, instrumental music, and even subtleties. Some examples of what people did: sing a song (Ryan, Jonathon & Constance, Svein, myself), extemporaneously write something on a given topic (Svein), play an instrument (Mary, myself), make a subtlety (Jonathon & Constance made the cutest marzipan gargoyles!).

Svein planned and cooked the feast, based on period recipes he redacted. [ I recommend you see his menu & documentation on the Web, either from the J&J site, or directly at http://baphomet.uchicago.edu/ingredients.html and http://baphomet.uchicago.edu/sources.html.] His helpers in the kitchen from our group included Brian and Beth (no SCA names yet) and Cecil duPont.

Group Demos: Student Activities Day at Univ. of Chicago on Oct. 4.
I was unable to attend (Crown Tourney on Oct. 3), as was our senechal, so I can’t give you any good info on who participated or what was demoed, but we had some new students show for our meetings the next two weeks, so someone was there.

Guilds &/or Special Interest Groups:
Tre Trepei (my choral group) sang at Crown Tourney, Japes & Jongluers, and Boar’s Head. We rehearse at my house about every other Tuesday night. Members include people from Gargoyles, T-G-S, and Rokkhealdon. People currently singing are: myself, Svein, Mary, Andra (Gargoyles), Andrew the Purple, Sorcha, Gianetta, Teleri (T-G-S), Gwenhyvar Nocturnal, Sivrid and Dorotea (Rok.).

Last report I said I’d tell more about our jugglers, but I haven’t seen them this semester; think we may have lost a few.

Personal Projects:
Andra de Louvain taught 3 classes at Greyhope Collegium on Nov. 7 -- 2 on costume (15-16c Netherlandish Costume & Ornamenting Costumes) and 1 (co-taught with me) on music (Embellishing 16c Music). In addition to the class with Andra, I taught another music class (on Modes). Mary McIntosh also taught a Celtic Harp class.

Among the other members of Grey Gargoyles, Constance is working on an embroidered beastiary, and Ryan of Grey Gargoyles continued his experiments into cooking and brewing, including making cheese one day (and some bread to eat with it). I understand he has been going to some Silver Thimble Guild meetings also. In addition, Constance has been assisting Guillermo in costuming.

Lady Mihri from T-G-S has been coming down about once a month to teach Middle Eastern dancing, while Jonathon continues leading the European dancing. Master Robbyan also came down once to teach music.

People to watch:
Andra’s research is really fabulous, especially in her favorite field, Franco-Flemish costume. She really knows her stuff (although she does tend to be a bit disorganized). She certainly deserves a Silver Oak. Her husband Hieronymous also does great work, but tends not to get noticed, because he is quiet and does Flemish peasant clothing (think Bruegel), which is not flashy.

Praises/Problems:
Ryan of Grey Gargoyles received his AoA at Japes & Jongluers (as did 3 other group members, but not for A&S stuff).

On a sad note, Mary’s harp broke! (Post-when this report was due.)

Questions or new info about office:

MoAS Goals and progress:
getting reports done on time : ha! We’ll blame being pregnant this time, but I’m notoriously bad at procrastinating any kind of paperwork. Maybe it will be better now that I’ve got this on the computer.

Events I’ll be attending:
Tre-Girt-Sea 12th Night - Jan 16
